I love reading about haunted houses, and I'll admit that I'm a sucker for a good haunted house film. In my life, I've had a couple of paranormal experiences. Neither one of them were frightening. When I think about the little ghost girl I heard mis-singing her ABCs at the school one day, I only feel sad that her life was cut short and bittersweet that she was still hanging around the school. And the shadow person I saw one day when my 'other' daughter was staying at my house during her not very amicable divorce...well, I'm almost positive that was her mother and one of my best friends checking in on her baby.
This weekend, I'm heading off to a supposedly haunted hotel. The Mission Inn, in Riverside, California, is a beautiful old hotel that spans an entire city block. I've stayed there several times in several different rooms. Only once have we had anything unusual happen and that was an odd knocking on our door very early one morning. We were staying in one of the rooms on the fourth floor, unfortunately I don't remember the room number. The sun was shining, so it's hard to think that the soft knocking was caused by anything otherworldly; however, there wasn't a soul on the walkway anywhere near our room. It's easier to believe it was someone in the room next door banging around.
While googling the Mission Inn, I stumbled upon the Los Angeles Paranormal Association's website entry about the place. Very interesting stuff. All I know is that when we check in, I'll be certain NOT to request rooms 401, 402, or 418! Yeah, I know, seize the day and all that. But honestly, I'd rather experience all that vicariously. Which is why I'm deep in edits for my own haunted hotel story. However, if you want to check out what I might be experiencing, click on the following link.

NaNoWriMo - Fantastic Idea or the Devil?
I am participating in NaNoWriMo for the first time, too. It's never been of particular interest to me because, frankly, glaciers move faster than I do when it comes to creating paragraphs. But I thought it was a cute idea.
Then I read, somewhere on the web, the opinion that NaNoWriMo cheapens the work and undermines the value of professional authors. If anyone can dash off 50,000 words in a month, why pay for words? According to this opinion, NaNoWriMo makes it seem like writing isn't a particular talent, nor an art, it's something anyone can do if they put their mind to it.
I'm not sure how I feel about that. So it was with great dismay that I saw the NaNoWriMo badge for this year. Last year it had coffee on it. I was hoping it would again, because I wanted to wear caffeine with pride.
Instead we've got this ... that is a machine, right? A machine churning out books? Rather unfortunate image, that.
It's a happy, cute machine. But what is it doing? Is it the POD wunderkind Espresso Book Machine? If so, cool!
If it's supposed to be the NaNoWriMo participant ... not so cool. Because yes, any "machine" can churn out words. But it takes revision to make them into books.
The gap between rough draft and finished product is wide and perilous, just as the space between first thing written and first thing publishable may be measured in years.
About the only thing writing and machines have in common is the old computer adage: Garbage in, garbage out.
Or maybe that's just the Luddite in me.
I suppose the important thing about NaNoWriMo is that it wants you to ignore your inner critic. Just get the words down first. You can't revise what you ain't got.
So that's how I'm approaching it - and I'm going to head-hop and use adverbs. Fie on you, Rules! I shall use adverbs copiously. Ha!

NaNoWriMo 2009 begins!

Today, it begins. NaNoWriMo2009. Mission: 50,000 words in 30 days. It’s possible. I’ve never been able to do it, but I made a commitment to not falter. Hey, I bought a NaNo t-shirt. For me, that is a promise to try my hardest. I don’t have money to spare, so the few dollars I spent is my commitment to finish this year.I am going with a zombie-vampire idea…but slightly different. It is going to be a hoot. Author pal Annmarie Ortega is going to be in it and she said she wanted a handgun. I have this image of her like Pam in Barbed Wire. Me? I’ll be more like Selene in Underworld, but with a machete. We are going to be doing some major kick ass action…with a good dose of comedy and hot scenes in there. Not sure I am going to include romance…I want to target the Exotika line at EC with this, so romance is not necessary. I am still calling it Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me. It is just so perfect. I didn’t start any plans for the book other than basics in my head.
I am finally going to use my leather snakeskin journal that I bought in Washington DC in July for this.
Anyone here doing NaNo? Friend me! Interested in reading the NaNo writing adventure? Click here.
I also want to say I moved my blog to my website. Blogger was giving me fits and loading so darn slow. So...I moved it. Same URL www.iwriteromance.com

Isabelle Drake's Alter Ego
Over the summer I started an Masters in Fine Art program. My concentration? Fiction, of course. One of my main motivations for pursuing the degree is to increase career opportunities. Another motivation is to improve my own fiction.
Funny thing is, I'd never even heard of an MFA until about three years ago. When I heard about it, I thought--geez, you can go to school to learn how to write stories? People take that sort of study seriously? Well, I can tell you now the answer is yes, they do. And there are A LOT of MFA programs around. The programs come in two types, traditional--residency--programs where you regularly attend classes, and newer--low residency programs. The low-residency programs allow greater flexibility and are great for those who are not interested in moving. With the low-res students attend several intensive workshops and do independent studies.
If you're interested, come on over and check out my blog: Adventures in MFA Land.

Welcome to the Jungle!

Hey all, it's been awhile but here I am again. I've been busy with the kids going back to school, writing and attending my first conference. The Muse Online Conference was an awesome experience and I can't wait to do it again next year. I've also had two new releases since the last time I was here.
Here is the blurb and excerpt for Tainted Blood:
Kali Myer has given up on life. Ever since she was five years old, she changed foster homes, always the misfit, the outcast, the intruder. All she truly wants is to find her family and to a place to belong.
After walking home from a horror movie with her friend Tavia one night, she was attacked by what she thought was an ordinary timber wolf. Days after the attack, Kali's whole world changed.
With her trusty dark-witch and roommate named Skyla, the women battle forces of the unknown looking for the were-wolf that started it all. They're looking for the one with Tainted Blood....
Will they find the 'Tainted Blood' or will he find them?
Part of the proceeds from the sale of this ebook and the other ebooks of the Sanctuary Moon Anthology will go to the Full Moon Farm a sanctuary for abused and refused wolf-dogs and captive-bred wolves.
Excerpt from Tainted Blood:
Zora laughed.
Kali ignored Zora annoying laughter as she hauled back and kicked the woman in the face. "Light's out." Kali smiled as the woman's head bounced from the tip of her shoe and landed heavily on the ground. Hearing Zora's clapping made her turn around. "Looks like it's just you and me now, Zora, old girl." Kali stepped over the unconscious woman but she left enough space for a decent head-start back to the cabin.
"Smart little shit, you think you've out-foxed me." Zora said in a shrill voice.
Kali didn't answer; she kept her eyes fixed on Zora's jerky movements. She could see the anger boiling underneath her skin causing her veins to appear black.
"I know who's at the cabin, Kali, a scared little witch crying in the night."
Oh no, she found, Skyla. I've got to get to her. Kali tried not to show the emotion running amuck throughout her core.
"Sebastian told us about the little witch himself. Don't you think if he truly cared about you he would have kept that tiny bit of information?" Zora smiled as the tides turned in her favor. "You have lived long past your purpose now you must die." Swiftly, Zora leaped over her fallen companion and tackled Kali to the ground. Kali winced in pain, doing her best to stop the barrage of attacks. She shrieked as Zora's talons dug deep her flesh.
"My pack has weakened you. You've taken them on just as I expected you would." Zora cackled as she punched Kali full in the face.
Kali's world shifted for a second. This was her final moment. Zora was right, she was spent and her last reserve of energy was depleting rapidly. The ground underneath the two women trembled and began to shift beneath their weigh.
"What the hell is this?" Zora sat back on her hunches with a puzzled look on her face.
Kali mustered up some strength and kicked Zora away from her.
"It's not what the hell is it; it's who the hell it is. Back off my sister you fuzzy bitch!" Skyla yelled as she emerged from the trees, her arm out-stretched.
Kali rolled to one side and started to stand; Skyla raced to her, put a free hand underneath her forearm and pulled Kali to her feet.
"Thanks," Kali smiled. "What took you so long?" She spat blood on the dirt and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand.
Skyla shot her a fervent glance. "Long? I had to waste time tracking your messes making sure you killed them all," Skyla began.
Kali noticed a purple bruise forming around her right eye. "I had a run-in with your boyfriend and let me tell you next time I see him," she punched her hand. "I'm gonna make him witach!"
"That's great but we gotta deal with her first." Kali nodded towards Zora.
Zora flipped up, snarling. "I'll feast on the flesh from both your bones before this night is through!"
The sisters looked at each other and then it Zora's direction.
"Do you wanna do this or shall I?" Skye mimicked her mature older sister.
Kali waved her hand dismissively. "Go right ahead."
"Ha! You send a teen-witch to do your dirty work, so you don't have the balls to face me alone." Zora laughed wickedly.
Skyla stood in front of Kali, cast her head over shoulder to see Kali nod and then turned back to Zora. "I am neither a teen nor just a mere witch." Skye said nastily.
"I don't care what you think you are. You are a child in my eyes." Zora bellowed each word dripped with malicious intent. Zora sneered and leaped to grab Skyla.
Skyla made a gesture as if she were scooping up fresh dirt and the earth sprung up and encased Zora's moving limbs.
"What the…" Zora exclaimed in disbelief.
"I'm half witch and half-elemental." Skyla squeezed her hand into a fist and rock cuffs on Zora's wrists and ankles tightened.
"I bet Sebastian didn't tell you that now, did he?" Kali asked over Skyla's shoulder.
Zora's struggled against her bounds but didn't answer.
"Skyla, finish this." Kali said as she started to walk away.
"Okay," Skye replied happily. With a wave of her hand the bounds on Zora crumbled like dry dirt. Zora hit the ground with a thud. She sprung up and laughed hysterically.
"You can't hold me, girl. I'm free..."
Zora didn't get the chance to finish her sentence as two boulders collided into her head simultaneously smashing it open like a rotten tomato. The headless body flopped around before collapsing in a bloody heap on the ground.
"That was pretty cool." Kali smiled, leaning against a tree.
"Yeah it was, huh?" Skyla ducked under Kali's arm to help support her weight.
This book was my first writing a female were wolf and I have to say I rather enjoyed a lot. Now Check out The Perfect Match which has been on the Red Rose Publishing Best Seller's list for almost 4 weeks.
Blurb:
Kiora Webb is a typical Pisces woman. Independent, creative, and romantic, but she just couldn't meet the right guy. Working at Caper's New and Used book store; was the perfect place for her. For an early birthday present her friends treat her to a girl's night out to Club Fusion where she meets slick talking Donovan Black. From his self-assured stance to his lame, run-down pick up lines, she dismisses him swiftly.
Donovan Black has never been turned down before. When beautiful Kiora Webb doesn't fall head over heels for him, he's crushed. Taking his failure as a game Donovan's buddies persuade him into thinking he could never have a woman like her. Donovan set out to prove them wrong. But what started out as a ploy turns into something that not neither one of them could foresee.
Excerpt for The Perfect Match:
"Donovan!" Demitri grabbed his shoulders. "Calm down. Don't lose control."
Donovan shrugged away from Demitri's embrace and stormed outside to cool off.
"You alright, man?" Demitri asked, holding out his hand to help Kevin stand.
Kevin shoved Demitri's hand away, stood up and followed Donovan outside.
"Oh damn," Demitri shook his head and chased after Kevin.
"Yo!" Kevin called. He stalked towards Donovan.
"Don't fuck with me right now, Kevin, alright?" Donovan's icy tone sent shivers through Demitri.
"Guys, let's not do this." Demitri positioned himself in between the two males.
"Naw," Donovan tossed away his lit cigarette, cracked his neck and stood his ground. "If he wants to roll, we can do that. I have no problems breaking him down now, anyway."
"Think you're a bad ass now, Dono? Got to taste some chocolate ass and now you think you're Don Quan?"
Donovan pointed at Kevin. "Don't you dare disrespect her again, Kevin, you don't even know her. I'm trying real hard to keep myself from knocking you off the damned pedestal you think you're on. Last warning, call her a name again, we ain't brothers, we ain't boys and we ain't friends. I will knock you on your ass and there's nothing my brother can do to stop me." He glared at Kevin.
"That's how it is, bro?" Kevin sidestepped Demitri. "We've been through a lot and you're gonna let some whore…"
As soon as the words left Kevin's mouth, Donovan's punch knocked Kevin in the slushy pool.
"I told you, Kevin!" Donovan yelled.
"Donovan!" Demitri fished a dripping and shivering Kevin from the pool.
"You alright?" Demitri asked, but it was no use. Kevin dashed after Donovan. Kevin dove for Donovan's legs, knocking him to the ground. Kevin used his brute strength to pin Donovan's chest to the ground while delivering a few quick jabs to his ribs.
With a quick burst of energy Donavan slugged Kevin on his left temple with his elbow point.
As Kevin swayed, Donovan threw Kevin off, then stood. Donavan's dark blue jeans were caked with mud and wet from the melting ice and snow. His white turtle neck was ruined with rips and ground-in stains. He spat crimson drops on the ground. Donavan wiped the blood from his lip on the tip of his sleeve.
"I don't wanna do this, Kevin. Enough. Take your ass-whippin' like a man. Get the fuck out!" Donovan snarled. His blood felt as if molten lava flowed through his veins. His anger erupted like a volcano.
Donavan wanted Kevin so he could figure out how to get Kiora back. Tomorrow was her birthday and…
Donovan was so consumed by his thoughts, he'd blocked out his brother's warning until he was too late. Kevin picked up a large rock and hurled in at Donovan. He felt the impact of the rock against his skull. It made a sickening cracking sound echoing in his sub-conscious. It was last he remembered before darkness engulfed him.
