Morning From Kacey

Morning everyone;
First off, my apologies for missing my day last month. My son was in the hospital, having been diagnosed with Type One Diabetes. It was shocking to discover him that morning looking very ashen, gaunt and sick to his stomach. Rushed him into Emergency and the Doc said what it was instantly, tests only confirmed it. After spending six days in the Hosp, learning insulin injections, sugar ratios, carbohydrates, starch numbers, etc., we came home and have struggled but pushed through to a new routine. The marvellous thing is that he's much healthier already and I still have my boy. He actually has improved his moods too. One thing I learned with this is that mood swings are huge and while my 8 year old has been the typical boy, his up and down mood swings -- irritability, frustrations, anger -- have been symptoms of the diabetes. I never knew that. But Jacob is doing great, still grumbles about the pen needles(insulin), doing his glucometer to test his sugar 4 times a day, but overall he's doing well.
On a high note for him, George Canyon was in our hometown this past week. George -- http://www.georgecanyon.com/ is also type one diabetic and whenever he can, he likes to meet with area children who have it as well and does a "Meet & Greet". Oct 12th Jacob and I had the privilege to meet this CCMA 2006 Country Music Artist of the Year and spend time with him directly, Jacob had a photo taken with him, and we attended his concert later that night where he did a shout out to Jacob. It has been wonderful for Jacob to know that no matter what, he can still be anything he wants to be in his life. One of his favourite hockey stars (from way back) also has it, and it's been great for him to know that he can still lead a more normal life.
Here's George and Jacob *grin*

It's been a learning experience for me and while there's been many emotional days, Jacob is doing well.

Writing news:

LAST MAN STANDING released on October 5th. I'm pleased with the whole process at Whispers. It was a wonderful and exhilarating experience. I love Jazz & Ryder. They are a couple that I hope to revisit again soon.

I've been working on a paranormal (Vampire) book. Outlining right now. Want it to be as close to perfect as possible, and since it's my first foray into writing this genre, I'm taking it slow and developing the world/plot much more delicately.

Today is a Book-A-Day Giveaway for Last Man Standing at The Romance Studio - http://www.theromancestudio.com/bad_form.php

Hi Kacey,
My prayers are with you and Jacob. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when I was 10 years old so I know how you both feel. There will be tough times ahead, but you will get through them as a family. I can't stress enough how important good blood sugar control is. Good control now will save Jacob a lot of health problems in the future. Trust me, I know!

God bless,
Rhonda :-)

Thank you so much Rhonda. What difficulties (not prying) do you face now (if any)?

I like to take things one day (one sugar test/needle!) at a time. Thankfully I've always been nit-picky with the kids and eating habits so that has helped tremendously. However, I must admit, I never paid attn to starch %, carbs, etc., We've always eaten a lot of fruits and veggies and the rest (before) was just what we ate. I always thought the fruits/veggies were the most important.

The Diabetic center here that he sees monthly, plus his doctor, have been outstanding. Without their support and my family, I would have been bonkers. But his Doctor has been very patient and so helpful. We were on daily phone contact, but he's away this week and I can only call if Mucho important :D Things have been progressing well and I don't feel as panicked anymore, which is a good thing.

I did feel totally out of control in the beginning but that's improved. I still second-guess myself at times with the units to give him if there's a significant change in his #s but not so much so anymore.

Jacob's been a trooper and I'm so glad to have him close. It's also brought us all closer - his sister & Brother and him, plus myself with all my kids. Didn't think that was possible since we were already so very close, but even that's improved.

Thank you again Rhonda for your encouragement.
